Audubon

Built in 1806, Oakley House is a striking example of colonial architecture shaped for the Louisiana climate. John James Audubon spent four months here in 1821, painting 32 of his celebrated bird studies while briefly teaching the Pirrie family’s daughter. Restored in the Federal style, the tall, airy home features jalousied galleries with West Indies influence, Adam mantels, and delicate exterior details that highlight its graceful simplicity. Surrounded by forest and history, Oakley was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
